Using salted butter for the frosting gives it a more pronounced caramel flavor.

What Kids Can Do
* Measure and sift sugar into bowl.
* Scrape bowl.
* Add vanilla and buttermilk.
* Transfer to container for party.

1. Slice butter into 8 pieces and place in a medium saucepan. Melt butter over medium heat. After butter melts, continue to heat until butter foams and begins to turn pale gold, about 2 to 4 minutes. As soon as it begins to brown, remove from heat. Pour into a large mixing bowl. Use a heat-proof rubber spatual to remove all the browned bits from the pan - this will give the frosting its caramel flavor.
2. Sift confectioners' sugar into bowl with butter. Use an electric mixer on medium speed to mix. Mixutre will be dry and crumbly. Add vanilla and 3 Tbsp. of the buttermilk. Mix on medium speed until light and smooth; if it seems slightly thick, add more buttermilk, I Tbsp. at a time, mixing until smooth. Use immediately, or refrigerate in an airtight container. Bring to room temperature 30 minutes before using.
